Technical consulting experience
Jason Ballard provides technical consulting and expert witness services through J Ballard Law. His background combines hands-on software engineering and system architecture with experience as a litigation associate. He examines source code, network traffic, and other technical evidence, then translates the findings into clear reports that counsel can evaluate and use.
Privacy investigations & historical analysis
Since 2018, he has assisted law firms in hundreds of litigation matters involving data privacy, digital tracking, web and mobile analytics, and alleged unauthorized disclosures. His work includes analyzing embedded trackers, pixels, software development kits, tag managers, and other data-collection mechanisms used in websites and mobile applications.
He evaluates how these technologies operated during particular periods, what information they could collect or disclose, and how their configurations changed over time. A significant part of his work involves reconstructing prior tracking configurations using archived web content and discovery materials, including historical scripts, tag-manager configurations, and legacy code paths.
Software, patents & trade secrets
His consulting work also includes analyzing software and system architectures in patent and trade-secret matters, preparing patent-infringement claim charts, reviewing source code for evidence relevant to alleged misappropriation, and assisting expert witnesses in grounding their analyses in the underlying technology.
His testifying expert engagements to date have involved confidential arbitration matters.
Engineering & litigation background
Before moving to full-time consulting, he served as System Architect for a large-scale digital banking platform. His work included secure authentication, REST APIs, mobile SDK initiatives, and debugging across mobile applications, backend services, and databases.
Earlier engineering and architecture roles included mobile application development, cloud migration, network-protocol analysis, malware and vulnerability research, reverse engineering, and tools supporting intrusion-prevention signature workflows.
As a litigation associate, he worked on patent, trade-secret, and commercial disputes, managed source-code reviews, and prepared technical analyses for infringement and misappropriation investigations.
